New Space Research Centre Commissioned at University of Ilorin
In a major boost for academic research and defense capabilities, the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has commissioned a state-of-the-art Space Research Centre. The facility, a collaborative project between the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and the Defence Space Administration (DSA), was officially opened in November 2025. It features an Advanced Space Composite Laboratory (ASCO LAB) designed to train the next generation of aerospace engineers and scientists.

The centre focuses on the development of satellite components, atmospheric research, and space weather monitoring. By situating such high-tech infrastructure within a university setting, the government aims to bridge the gap between theoretical academic work and practical national security needs. The Nigerian Air Force has also partnered with the centre to develop indigenous solutions for aerial surveillance and communications, reducing reliance on foreign technology.
Building Indigenous Capacity
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Wahab Egbewole described the centre as a "game-changer" for STEM education in Nigeria. Students will now have hands-on access to equipment previously available only abroad. The facility is expected to attract research grants and foster international partnerships, positioning UNILORIN as a hub for space science in the sub-region.
