NASRDA and Proforce Partner on Satellite Constellation Project
In a strategic move to bolster national security and technological independence, the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) announced a major partnership with Proforce, a leading Nigerian defense manufacturer, in August 2024. The collaboration aims to develop and launch a constellation of earth observation and communication satellites. This public-private partnership is designed to leverage Proforce's manufacturing capabilities alongside NASRDA's scientific expertise.

The project addresses critical gaps in Nigeria's satellite capacity, following reports that several existing satellites have reached the end of their operational lifespans. The new constellation will focus on precision agriculture, border surveillance, and disaster management. By involving a private sector player, the government hopes to accelerate the development timeline and ensure the commercial viability of the space assets.
Dual-Use Technology
Experts highlight the dual-use nature of the proposed satellites. While primarily serving civilian needs like weather forecasting and resource mapping, the high-resolution imagery will be invaluable for defense agencies combatting insurgency. This synergy between the defense sector and space science represents a mature approach to national development, maximizing the return on investment for costly space infrastructure.
